There was a time when a man’s work shirt wasn’t designed by people who’d never wear it. It was shaped by weather, machinery, and twelve-hour days. Every seam had a purpose. Every pocket earned its place. If a detail survived, it was because someone depended on it.

The Atlas comes from that world.

Cut from a rare 6.5 oz. Japanese-milled selvedge salt & pepper chambray, known in devades past as covert cloth, it possesses the kind of quiet character that only twisted yarns can create. Up close, the fabric reveals a landscape of light and dark threads that shift with the sun. It was prized for disguising dirt long before anyone spoke of “patina.” Today, only a handful of mills, all in Japan, still produce true selvedge salt & pepper fabric, making it as uncommon as the originals. 

This is the also final Sage Atlas to use this now-discontinued Japanese fabric. Future production runs will feature a lighter 6 oz. version, making this release the last opportunity to own the original cloth.

The chinstrap, or extension neckband as it was originally known, was never a fashion flourish. Fastened against the wind, it kept dust from creeping down the collar and made long days outdoors just a little more bearable. We’ve preserved it because some ideas deserve another century.

The cuffs trace their lineage to Big Yank’s ingenious 1937 “Elbow Action” patent. A one-piece fold-over construction that offered greater freedom to swing a hammer, wrestle machinery, or stack lumber without the sleeve binding at the elbow. Practical engineering, disguised as simplicity.

You’ll find chain stitching throughout the major seams, a high, narrow back yoke, authentic 1930s pocket shapes, selvedge gussets, and sturdy urea cat’s eye buttons. Not because nostalgia demands them, but because they remain the best expression of what a proper work shirt can be.

The Atlas is also made in Japan with John Lofgren & Co., where craftsmanship is still measured in how workers are treated rather than production quotas. Each shirt carries a garment worker’s tag bearing my name, a quiet promise that the hands which made it were treated with the same respect as the person who wears it.

As for covert cloth, the name comes from the English countryside, where a covert was the wooded refuge of a fox before the hunt began. The cloth borrowed the name because its mottled surface concealed dirt as naturally as the trees concealed the fox. Some fabrics tell a story. This one has been telling it for well over a century.

The Atlas isn’t simply another work shirt.

It’s the sort of shirt that makes you stand a little straighter when you button the last button. The sort that gathers stories instead of wearing out. The kind I hope you’ll eventually hand to someone else, along with the tales of where it has been.
