From the factory floor to the farm, the garage to the delivery route, few garments have earned their place in the workingman's wardrobe quite like a good pair of work pants. Of all the styles to emerge from the last century, the chino trouser became one of the most enduring. And among the fabrics favored by working men in the first half of the 20th century, few were as familiar as salt & pepper.

The Daybreak Work Pants are cut from 11-oz. Japanese-milled salt & pepper twisted yarn fabric, a cloth with an uncommon combination of lightness and durability. Soft to the touch, yet remarkably forgiving of grease, dirt, and the everyday evidence of a day's work. There was good reason mechanics took to this fabric in particular. Even Marlon Brando wore the stuff in A Streetcar Named Desire.

The details are drawn from my collection of vintage workwear: double-welted rear pockets, a double-welted watch pocket, a button fly secured with Japanese-made urea buttons, and a single urea button at the back pocket, just as you might have found on an original pair.

The inseams and outseams are both double-chain stitched and flat felled for a durable, clean finish. Inside, the fly seams are taped, and a garment workers' label provides a small nod to the people who made their living sewing such clothes.

A Japanese-milled, 5-oz. discharge-dyed Wabash cloth finishes the waistband and back pockets, while seven belt loops complete the arrangement. 

Once upon a time, these were simply the trousers a fellow wore to work. No nostalgia involved, no particular statement being made. They were comfortable, serviceable, and well suited to the business at hand. We think that's still a rather good reason to wear them. The Daybreaks are ready for duty.
