{The Rite Stuff x Codina Leather} ‘Streetcar’ 1930s-style Jewel and Stud Belt (Black teacore)
The year: 1950. The belt? Pure 1930s. Marlon Brando stood for his likeness to be etched into film for production photos for A Streetcar Named Desire. On his waist was this belt. Was it his own? A costume one? Well likely never know. But we do know is belts don’t get much better.
Studs. Jewels. A belt that doesn’t ask for attention, it demands it. The belt itself belongs to an earlier time, the 1930s. Worn by rodeo riders, kids who dreamed of becoming Hopalong Cassidy, and men who never backed down.
Brando wore it with salt and pepper work pants like our Daybreak Work Pants. And a slub yarn tee. The same kind we make. And we took it to the next level with a 1930s reproduction ‘Indian style’ buckle. This belt buckle design was patented in 1937 by John R. Craighead of Denver, Colorado. His eponymous company was a well-known manufacturer and wholesaler of leather goods, including saddles, harnesses, gun belts, chaps, and toys.
These buckles are made exclusively in the USA for Codina Leather and closely match the 1930s originals. They feature the Native American whirling logs symbol, which dates back to around 2000 BC. In their book Comet, Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan suggest that a four-tailed comet, visible across the Old World and the pre-Columbian Americas, could explain why this symbol appears in so many ancient cultures around the globe, from Greece to India to the Americas.
Made in the United States from American-made top grain Hermann Oak bridle leather that’s tough as nails. The buckle, the studs, the jewels. All American. The jewels are the last of their kind. The factory that made them closed its doors for good. There will be no more soon enough.
You may not be Marlon Brando, but you can dress like him anytime.
And last but not least, the Streetcar belt is made in the heart of the West in Las Vegas, Nevada by famed leather artisan, Matt Codina of Codina Leather.
