The Icebreaker is based on a vintage original 1940s Montgomery Ward buffalo plaid flannel in my collection, but while it features period-correct details it doesn’t feel out of place in the modern era.

Fabric

The fabric is an 11 oz. 100% cotton brushed flannel, milled in Japan. We actually reversed the fabric to make the double-brushed exterior go in the inside instead, which serves to keep you extra warm on cool days. Both sides are extra soft too, for all-day comfort.

Cut

The cut on the Icebreaker is generous from the shoulders, sleeve width, cuffs and chest down the waist. It’s built not to constrain you but instead to be comfortable whether worn tucked or untucked.

Details

Details abound here: all main seams are double-row chainstitched for extra durability. We reproduced the pointed, cutaway collar of the Wards original as closely as possible for a collar shape not seen on your average flannel. The neck features taffeta woven brand and size tags, while the double chest pockets have heavy-duty flaps and a pencil slit. The sides are firmly anchored with gussets at the bottom and the back yoke is a period-correct high and thin cut. The inside also features one line of white chainstitching for a touch of contrast.

Hardware

The buttons are corozo buttons, also known as tagua nut, and are made in Panama from naturally harvested tagua palm nuts. They’re exact replicas of the original shirt’s buttons, which are the same rare, bowl-shaped buttons found on original Uncle Sam shirts and our reproduction version.

History

Buffalo plaid got its name because the modern version was developed in 1850 by a designer at Woolrich Woolen Mills in Woolrich, PA who owned a small herd of bison. He based it on the original Old MacGregor tartan from Scotland, also known as ‘Rob Roy’ tartan because RRoy is depicted wearing this tartan plaid in more than one painting.
