There was a time when a man’s work shirt wasn’t designed by people who’d never wear it. It was shaped by weather, machinery, and twelve-hour days. Every seam had a purpose. Every pocket earned its place. If a detail survived, it was because someone depended on it.
The Sage Atlas is a Japanese-made work shirt built from that tradition, combining a rare 6.5 oz. selvedge salt and pepper chambray with authentic details drawn from American workwear of the 1930s.
6.5 oz. Selvedge Salt & Pepper Chambray
The Atlas is cut from a rare 6.5 oz. Japanese-milled selvedge salt and pepper chambray, historically known as covert cloth. Made with twisted yarns, the fabric has a distinctive mottled appearance created by the interplay of light and dark threads.
Originally prized as a practical work fabric, covert cloth could conceal dirt and wear better than plain-colored fabrics. Its character becomes even more apparent with wear, as the contrasting yarns shift in appearance depending on the light.
Today, only a handful of Japanese mills still produce true selvedge salt and pepper fabric, making this kind of chambray increasingly difficult to find.
This is the final Sage Atlas made with this 6.5 oz. Japanese fabric. The fabric has been discontinued, and future production of the Atlas will use a lighter 6 oz. version. If you want the original 6.5 oz. covert chambray, this is the last opportunity to own it.
A 1930s Work Shirt, Recreated in Japan
The Atlas draws on the practical engineering of vintage American work shirts, preserving details that existed because they solved real problems.
The extension neckband, commonly known as a chinstrap, was designed to fasten the collar more securely against the neck. For workers spending long days outdoors, it helped keep wind and dust from finding their way inside the shirt. We kept it because some good ideas deserve another century.
The cuffs are based on Big Yank’s ingenious 1937 “Elbow Action” patent, using a one-piece fold-over construction designed to give the wearer greater freedom of movement. Whether swinging a hammer, working machinery, or stacking lumber, the construction reduces binding around the elbow.
It is practical engineering disguised as simplicity.
The Atlas also features chainstitching along the major seams, a high and narrow back yoke, authentic 1930s pocket shapes, selvedge gussets, a selvedge placket, and sturdy urea cat’s eye buttons. These details aren’t there simply for vintage appeal. They are part of what made work shirts effective in the first place.
Made in Japan
The Sage Atlas is made in Japan in collaboration with John Lofgren & Co., where craftsmanship is still measured in terms of quality rather than production quotas.
Each shirt carries a garment worker’s tag bearing my name. It is a small detail, but an important one: a reminder that the hands making the shirt deserve the same respect as the person who wears it.
The Last 6.5 oz. Sage Atlas
The Atlas isn’t simply another work shirt.
It is a Japanese-made selvedge chambray work shirt built around the details that made vintage workwear so enduring. The kind of shirt that gathers stories instead of simply wearing out. The kind that gets better with use, develops its own character, and, if you take care of it, might eventually be handed down to someone else along with the stories of where it has been.
