{New Arrival} Atlas Salt & Pepper Work Shirt (Sage Green)
*Endangered: The Sage green Atlas fabric will sadly be discontinued by the mill in Japan. Our supply of the final remaining rolls of this fabric is limited, and once they're used, it will no longer be available. We’re working on securing a similar fabric but it won’t be identical. Ensure that you get your hands on this rare and coveted fabric while you still can.*
The Sage Atlas is more than just a work shirt – it's a titan among work shirts. When you wear this shirt, you're telling the world that you take craftsmanship seriously and demand the best from your gear.
This new Atlas run is cut over a slightly roomier pattern too: we’ve added one centimeter in width to the sleeves and cuff, and two centimeters at the waist. While that might not sound like much, it makes the shirt more easy-wearing and rolling up the sleeves is now a cinch!
The Atlas is made from a robust 6.5 oz. selvedge twisted yarn salt & pepper chambray, also referred to as covert cloth*, that’s milled in Japan. This fabric is one of the only remaining selvedge salt & pepper fabrics made in the world today, so you know you're getting something special.
But it's not just the fabric that makes the Atlas stand out. This shirt is packed with 1930s details, such as the "chinstrap" (aka extension neckband) to keep out the elements and give you a cleaner fit. Plus, you've got ecru stitching, chainstitching, and a high, thin back yoke for period work shirt accuracy.
The fold-over cuffs were patented by Reliance Mfg. Co. for its Big Yank shirts in 1937 and are a one-piece cuff marketed as “elbow action” sleeves and cuffs. The idea was to provide more room at the elbow for greater ease of movement and to eliminate the cuff placket to help prevent the sleeve from being caught or torn.
The period details continue with the pocket shapes used by Big Yank in the ‘30s, selvedge gussets, and urea cat's eye buttons.
And let's not forget that the Atlas is made in Japan with John Lofgren & Co., who are known for their top-notch quality and fair treatment of workers. Thus, you can wear this shirt with pride, knowing that you're supporting a product that's made with care and attention to detail. The garment workers' tag with my name on it is my guarantee that it's made exploitation-free.
*Did you know that "covert" comes from fox hunting in England? It's the name given to a fox's hiding spot, and that's where hunts usually start. Covert cloths were made by twisting different colored yarns before weaving, resulting in a fabric that looks great and resists dirt and wear. Now you know!
