{Pre-order for '27} Hercules 5 oz. Selvedge Chambray Work Shirt (Indigo)
The Hercules is the shirt that started The Rite Stuff. Originally introduced as our first-ever product, this Japanese-made selvedge chambray work shirt returns for our 10th anniversary with a new fabric, refined details, and the same commitment to building clothing that lasts.
Inspired by the wild scalloped yoke work shirts that first appeared in Chicago around 1912, the Hercules (originally known as the Heracles) is a Japanese-made selvedge chambray work shirt built for year after year of wear. Combining authentic early American workwear design with meticulous Japanese craftsmanship, it features 5 oz. Japanese-milled selvedge chambray, triple chainstitched construction, reinforced stress points, and reproduction 1920s hardware. Whether you're looking for a heritage work shirt, a durable everyday overshirt, or a premium Japanese chambray shirt that will develop character over time, the Hercules was built with longevity in mind.
The latest version introduces a roomier, more historically accurate fit with less waist taper, wider chest pockets, a slightly longer period-correct collar, and repositioned ventilation eyelets for improved authenticity.
Why you'll like it
The Hercules isn't simply inspired by vintage work shirts. It recreates the construction methods, proportions, and functional details that made early 20th-century American workwear so dependable.
Every feature serves a purpose. Reinforced yokes improve durability across the shoulders and underarms, elbow reinforcements extend the life of the sleeves, ventilation eyelets improve comfort in warm weather, and triple chainstitched seams provide exceptional durability throughout the garment.
The result is a work shirt that feels equally at home worn as everyday clothing, layered over a T-shirt, or worn full-on heritage or for reenactment.
Materials & construction
The Hercules is cut from 5 oz. 100% cotton selvedge chambray woven in Japan. The lightweight fabric makes it suitable across multiple seasons while remaining durable enough for daily wear.
Construction follows traditional workwear methods throughout.
Features include:
- 5 oz. Japanese-milled selvedge chambray
- 100% cotton construction
- Triple-chainstitched main seams
- Scalloped shoulder yokes and deep scalloped rear yoke
- Double-layer elbow reinforcement extending to the cuffs
- Continuous one-piece sleeve plackets reinforced with bartacks
- Selvedge gussets
- Underarm and rear ventilation eyelets
- Extension neckband ("chinstrap")
- Reproduction painted metal cat's eye buttons made in Japan
- Double-row stitched pencil slot in the left chest pocket
- Slightly longer tails that stay tucked in
- One wash finish for minimal shrinkage
The painted metal cat's eye buttons are based on originals from the 1920s. Unlike plastic buttons, they'll develop a natural patina with years of wear.
Fit & sizing
This updated version offers a more relaxed silhouette than previous releases, with less taper through the waist while maintaining a classic workwear fit.
The longer collar, wider pockets, and revised vent placement more closely follow original shirts from the 1910s and 1920s.
